7th Annual Blizzard Bluegrass comes to BSC

By Brian Gehring

Bismarck State College is hosting the seventh annual Blizzard Bluegrass Weeken
Jan. 6-7, featuring area favorites Cotton Wood.
The Washburn-area band opens
concerts at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 6-7 at the Sidney J. Lee Auditorium with special guests
The Woodpicks, a Thief River Falls, Minn., group.

Tickets are $15 and available at Eckroth Music, Jacobsen Music, Stringbean and
Night Life Music in Bismarck, Chase Drug and Java Rose in Washburn, Corner
Express in Center or at the door.

The Woodpicks will also perform a free concert at 10 a.m. Friday at Wilton High
School.

Jill Wiese, bassist for Cotton Wood, said a big part of the weekend is the hands-on
workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the BSC Leach Music Center.
The cost of
the workshop, which includes instruction on fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandolin and bass,
is $5.

Wiese said proceeds will go to purchase guitars for Wilton and Bismarck guitar
instruction programs.
She said the band also hopes to donate funds to the Huff Hills
ski patrol, of which she has been a member for 15 years.
Wiese said the patrol needs new splints and specialized gear to enable people with
disabilities to ski.

Cotton Wood has been together 10 years and recently released its third CD,
"Sanger Hall," a mix of original works and classic country, folk and bluegrass tunes.
Members are Wiese on bass; Dan Foster on guitar and mandolin; Keith Koch on guitar;
and Lee Benjamin on banjo, guitar and dobro. All members of the band sing.

The Woodpicks are a blend of gospel, country, bluegrass and Americana music
featuring strong vocals and harmonies and original arrangements of their work and standards.
The song "Barn Again!" is included in the Smithsonian in their collection of Americana.
